Thomas Jefferson Randolph letter to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia [manuscript], [after 1826, July 4].

Randolph writes that, although his grandfather Thomas Jefferson willed his library to the University of Virginia Library, the "deeply embarrassed state in which his affairs were left renders it extremely doubtful whether his property will be sufficient to meet claims upon it of a higher dignity." In order to save Jefferson's library from harm while the estate is dispersed, Randolph asks permission to deposit it at the University Library "subject to my future order, should it become necessary to expose it to sale." In addition, Randolph states that he will be unable to present to the University Library the bust of Jefferson sculpted by Ceracchi; the presentation was an informal request by Jefferson and not a formal legacy in his will. As such, Randolph is compelled to include the bust in the sale of Jefferson's estate. Randolph concludes by assuring the Board that when Jefferson's debts are discharged, he will comply with the terms of Jefferson's will if at all possible, no matter how much financial distress it might cause the family.
